Is Credit Repair Legal in Massachusetts?
Yes. Credit repair is legal in Massachusetts and governed at the federal level by the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). White Jacobs operates in full compliance with CROA, which means we do not charge upfront fees before services are rendered, we provide a written contract, and we honor your three-day right to cancel.
Massachusetts’ statute of limitations on consumer debt is 6 years for both written contracts (MGL c.260 §2) and open accounts including credit cards. This means creditors have a 6-year window from the date of first default to sue and collect through Massachusetts courts. After that period, a time-barred defense may be available — though the debt may still appear on your credit report for up to 7 years under the FCRA.
Regarding wage garnishment: Massachusetts caps wage garnishment at 15% of gross wages — significantly more protective than the federal standard of 25% of disposable earnings. A court judgment is required before any garnishment can begin. Massachusetts also exempts Social Security and certain other income from garnishment entirely. Additionally, Massachusetts consumers have additional protections under Chapter 93A, the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act. The FCRA gives every Massachusetts consumer the right to dispute inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information on their credit reports at no cost.

Massachusetts Credit & Debt — What Consumers Need to Know
MGL c.260 §2 sets a 6-year window from the date of first default for written contracts including most consumer loans and credit agreements.
Credit cards and revolving accounts. Massachusetts applies the same 6-year limitation to open accounts including credit cards and revolving credit lines.
A creditor must obtain a court judgment before garnishing wages. Massachusetts limits garnishment to 15% of gross wages — more protective than the federal 25% of disposable income standard. Social Security and certain other income are fully exempt.

Massachusetts Credit Repair FAQs
Massachusetts’ statute of limitations for most consumer debt is 6 years from the date the debt first became past due, under MGL c.260 §2. After this 6-year window, a creditor may not be able to sue to collect in Massachusetts courts. However, the debt may still appear on your credit report for up to 7 years under the federal FCRA. Making a payment on a time-barred debt may restart the SOL clock — consult a consumer attorney before paying an old account.
Massachusetts caps wage garnishment at 15% of gross wages — significantly more protective than the federal standard of 25% of disposable earnings. A creditor must first obtain a court judgment before any garnishment can begin. Massachusetts also exempts Social Security, certain pension income, and other protected income from garnishment entirely. This is one of the most protective garnishment regimes in the country for workers.
The Boston metro median home price has crossed $700,000 and Cambridge and other inner-ring suburbs are even higher. At these price points, a 40-point credit score difference can mean tens of thousands of dollars in additional interest over a 30-year loan. Even consumers with above-average credit may find that a single inaccurate item is costing them access to the best rate tier. White Jacobs can review any Boston-area credit file and advise on what may be addressable before you apply.
Massachusetts is home to an elite university complex — Harvard, MIT, Tufts, BU, BC, UMass, Northeastern, and many others. Student loans must be reported accurately, especially during grace periods and deferment. Loans reported late during an active grace or deferment period may be disputable under the FCRA. Thin files for recent graduates are also common. White Jacobs can review how your student loans are reporting and advise on inaccuracies and building strategy.
Mass General Brigham (formerly Partners Healthcare) is the largest hospital network in New England with over 80,000 employees. Its billing volume is enormous and errors do reach credit files. Recent federal changes removed medical collections under $500 from bureau reports, and collections must follow FCRA notice procedures before reporting. White Jacobs can review whether your Mass General Brigham, Dana-Farber, or other Massachusetts hospital accounts comply with current reporting requirements.
Yes. Massachusetts has Hanscom AFB in Bedford and Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station among other installations. Military families face distinct credit challenges: PCS moves that leave accounts in the wrong status, SCRA protections that may not be correctly applied by creditors, and security clearance applications that require accurate files. White Jacobs can review military credit files for FCRA inaccuracies and SCRA compliance issues.
Chapter 93A is the Massachusetts Consumer Protection Act and provides broad protections against unfair or deceptive business practices — including by debt collectors and credit reporting agencies. Massachusetts consumers may have rights under Chapter 93A that go beyond federal FCRA rights. If a debt collector or creditor has engaged in deceptive conduct related to your credit, a consumer attorney may advise on Chapter 93A remedies. White Jacobs operates under CROA and FCRA; for Chapter 93A-specific legal claims, consult a Massachusetts consumer attorney.
Kendall Square in Cambridge is the world’s top biotech corridor — Moderna, Biogen, Pfizer R&D, and hundreds of startups draw talent from across the country. Relocated professionals frequently have accounts from prior states that may be misreporting, old addresses causing confusion, or thin files in the Massachusetts credit market. White Jacobs can review any relocated professional’s credit file and advise on what may be addressable before a Boston-area home purchase.
Credit report retention is governed by the federal FCRA, not Massachusetts state law. Most negative items — late payments, collections, charge-offs — may remain for up to 7 years. Chapter 7 bankruptcies may remain for up to 10 years. The fact that a debt is past Massachusetts’ 6-year SOL does not automatically remove it from your credit report. If an item is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable, you have the right to dispute it regardless of age.
Yes. The initial credit review consultation is completely free and carries no obligation. CROA also prohibits credit repair companies from charging upfront fees before services have been rendered, so you will never be charged before we have performed the agreed-upon work. The consultation gives you and our analyst a chance to review your situation, discuss your goals, and determine whether our services may be a fit — with no pressure and no cost.
