The Problem

Ohio Credit Challenges Run Deep

  • Rust Belt economic cycles: Manufacturing job losses, plant closures, and layoffs across auto, steel, and rubber industries have created generational credit damage in Ohio cities.
  • Medical debt burden: Many Ohio cities have high uninsured and underinsured populations. Medical collections are a leading cause of score damage across Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown.
  • 2008 foreclosure shadow: Ohio was among the hardest-hit states in the foreclosure crisis. Foreclosure records linger on credit files for 7 years — some Ohio residents are still carrying that weight.
  • Military PCS errors: Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton creates the same address-change and deployment-disruption errors seen in Virginia's military markets.
  • SOL confusion: Ohio uses a single 6-year SOL for both written contracts and credit card debt — but many collectors still attempt collection on debts well past this window.
Our Solution

How White Jacobs Helps Ohio Residents

  • Accurate dispute process: We identify errors — outdated balances, duplicate accounts, mixed files, time-barred debts still reporting — and dispute them through the credit bureaus.
  • Medical debt expertise: Medical collections have complex reporting rules. We review every medical account for inaccurate balances, billing errors, and outdated reporting.
  • SOL guidance: Ohio's 6-year SOL applies equally to written contracts and credit card debt. We help you understand when debts are time-barred and what that means for collectors.
  • Military support: Wright-Patterson families face SCRA issues and PCS errors we know how to address.
  • No guarantees — just process: We promise a thorough, legally compliant dispute process backed by 25 years of experience — not specific score outcomes.

Ohio Statute of Limitations Snapshot

Understanding when a debt becomes time-barred can affect how you respond to collectors. This is general information — consult an attorney for advice specific to your situation.

Written Contracts
6 Years
Ohio Rev. Code § 2305.07

Applies to personal loans, auto loans, and installment agreements with a signed written contract.

Open Accounts
6 Years
Ohio Rev. Code § 2305.07

Ohio courts apply the same 6-year window to credit card debt. Unlike Virginia, Ohio does not distinguish between written contracts and open accounts for SOL purposes.

Wage Garnishment
25% Cap
ORC § 2329.66

A court judgment is required. The debtor keeps the greater of 75% of disposable income or 30x the federal minimum wage. Garnishment without a judgment is unlawful.

This is not legal advice. Statutes of limitations do not remove accurate negative information from your credit report. The clock typically runs from the date of last activity.

★★★★★

"I'm a tech worker near Ohio State and had student loans overlapping with two credit card errors — one was a duplicate account that appeared after a balance transfer. White Jacobs identified the duplicate in the initial review and disputed it. They were honest that the student loan history stays — they focused only on what was actually inaccurate. The process was exactly what they described."

★★★★★

"I was laid off during a manufacturing downturn and had medical debt from a gap in insurance. White Jacobs disputed two medical accounts — one had an incorrect balance, one was past the reporting window. Both were updated after the bureau investigations. I can't promise the same for everyone but they were thorough and honest throughout."

P.L. — Cleveland, OH Goal: Medical Debt + Auto Financing
★★★★★

"I'm Air Force at Wright-Patterson and a PCS move created address-change errors in my credit file. Two accounts had wrong addresses attached and one showed a missed payment that was actually paid — the payment was processed after we moved and credited to the wrong account. White Jacobs caught all three and disputed them efficiently. Good process for military families."

Ohio Credit Repair FAQs

Ohio applies a 6-year statute of limitations to both written contracts and credit card debt under ORC § 2305.07. Unlike Virginia, Ohio does not distinguish between written contracts and open accounts — the same 6-year window applies to both. If a debt is more than 6 years past the date of last activity, a collector may be time-barred from suing you in Ohio. This does not remove the debt from your credit report, which follows a separate 7-year reporting window.

Manufacturing layoffs — common in Ohio's auto, steel, and rubber industries — create income gaps that lead to missed payments, increased credit utilization, and collection accounts. Some of this is accurate negative history that stays on your report for 7 years. However, the chaos of a job transition also produces inaccurate reporting — wrong payment dates, duplicate entries, accounts that were paid but still show open. Those inaccurate items are disputable under the FCRA.

Medical debt under $500 was removed from the major credit bureau reports in 2023. Paid medical debts were also removed. For larger unpaid medical debts that remain on reports: if the balance is inaccurate, the date is wrong, the debt belongs to someone else, or it has passed the 7-year reporting window, those elements are disputable under the FCRA. Medical billing errors are common — we review every medical collection account in Ohio client files carefully.

Foreclosures remain on credit reports for 7 years from the date of the first missed payment that led to the foreclosure. If your 2008 foreclosure resulted from a missed payment in 2007 or 2008, it should have dropped off by 2014–2015. If it's still appearing, that's an outdated item that is disputable and should be removed. If the reporting date is accurate and within the 7-year window, it is accurate negative information that cannot be legitimately removed.

Yes. Active-duty servicemembers at Wright-Patterson and other Ohio installations are covered by SCRA, which caps interest rates at 6% on pre-service debt and provides protections against default judgments during deployment. Errors that arose during deployment or PCS moves — missed payments due to military pay delays, address-change errors — are often disputable under the FCRA as inaccurate or unverifiable.

No. Ohio requires a court judgment before any wage garnishment. Once a judgment exists, creditors can garnish up to 25% of your disposable earnings, or the amount by which your disposable earnings exceed 30 times the federal minimum wage weekly — whichever is less. ORC § 2329.66. Disputing inaccurate debts before a judgment is far better than contesting a garnishment after the fact.

Ohio's high CFPB complaint volume relative to its population reflects the state's elevated credit challenges: manufacturing job losses, high medical debt burdens, 2008 foreclosure residue, and a collection industry that has been aggressive in Rust Belt markets. High complaint volume also reflects consumer awareness — Ohioans know their rights and use them. That's a good thing, and it's why credit repair in Ohio often involves collectors who have pushed the envelope.

Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act (ORC § 1345) prohibits unfair, deceptive, and unconscionable practices in consumer transactions, including certain debt collection conduct. It works alongside the federal FDCPA. Ohio Attorney General actions under CSPA have targeted deceptive collectors. For specific CSPA advice, consult an Ohio attorney — White Jacobs operates under federal FCRA/CROA framework.

Bureau disputes are investigated within 30–45 days per round. Ohio files often have more complexity — multiple collection accounts, medical debts, and manufacturing-era errors — that require multiple dispute rounds. Expect 3–6 months for a thorough process on a complex file. We do not promise a specific timeline because every credit file is different.

Yes. Under the FCRA you have the same dispute rights that White Jacobs uses on your behalf. You can write to the bureaus directly at no cost, request investigations, and file complaints with the CFPB. White Jacobs provides expertise, persistence, and knowledge of what is and is not worth disputing — but we are never your only option. The CROA requires us to tell you that, and we mean it.
